In addition to what was said above:

-- A .txt file is always readable, and the minimal formatting possible with .txt is usually retained fairly well.

-- A .pdf file can be a problem, and, if you search around the board, you'll see repeated discussions of this. If, on a PC, it looks like it would be hard to fit what is on a pdf page into a readable Kindle-sized screen, it probably is. One of the first things that could be tried is to email your pdf, as an attachment, to your kindle email address. Make sure to have this one word as the subject of that email:

P.S. I assumed above that you have the common 6 inch screen Kindle. The 9.7 inch Kindle DX does a better job with the more complex pdf's.
