I did some looking into this, and it seems like the QTRawFont API should replace whatever thing it was that the bug was in. It's just a matter of when that API gets integrated in the stable version of QtWebKit (the stuff I read seems to indicate it should be available alongside 4.8, but user_none doesn't think so and he's the expert) and altering Sigil to use it.
So, the problem has been solved, it's just a matter of waiting for the solution to work its way to us.
