Plug the Kindle in via USB
Give it a few seconds the add the device and make sure things are ok
Go to "My Computer"
There should be a drive there named "Kindle" - Open that.
Go into the folder "documents"
Paste in the txt/pdf files that you want to move over - remember to name them something you can remember/find easily.
Unplug Kindle and it should take a second or two to refresh and show the new 'books' in your home screen.
