As you have mentioned there is a potential problem if multiple instances of Calibre are running aginst the same calibre database.

However how about in your case letting family members view and retrieve books using the calibre Content Server? There are no problems with multiple people using that at the same time as the Content Server never updates the database. You should also be able to use multiple instances of the Calibre viewer at the same time I believe.
