got there in the end.
you have to make sure tftpd is installed (which was not on mine, also repository needs updated). also you have to have a serial terminal on.
which I did by doing
sudo apt-get install screen
and than
screen /dev/ttyS0 115200
It is doing something but seems slow for loading a 200k file over serial.
