I don't think any of these programs (I've briefly tried Writeway, Scrivener, and Yarny) are meant to replace Word. They simply can't compete with Word in features. After all, they are not supported by a huge corporation but by small companies and sometimes were created by a single person. But whereas Word tries to be everything to everybody, these programs focus on helping you create and organize the first draft of a large piece of work. After that, I suppose I will be exporting and doing the final edit in Word, but I love the flexibility they offer me.
After Dr. Drib's enthusiastic review, I ended up buying Scrivener for Windows.

I am also enjoying Yarny, a web app that stores your writing in the cloud, so it can be very convenient for someone who writes on several computers. I love their minimalistic approach to interface design. When they add the offline feature, it will be a great choice, in my opinion. But it's not a Word wannabe; don't expect the same functionality at all.
