I agree it is inexpensive, but if you are designing to a $249 price adding a $2 (say) card reader costs $2 in profit because you are not going to raise the price to $251. A bigger reason for avoiding card readers is the support costs. Amazon had a card reader on the Kindle 1, and I would not be surprised if it caused a large fraction of the hardware-based device returns. Even so, I think Amazon should have included a SD reader on the Fire because storing large movie files in the cloud isn't the same as storing ebooks there.
