This sounds similar to what people are referring to as the dictionary pop-up freeze. Yes, when the paging occurs if you hit one of the page buttons then you can stop it and keep reading with the buttons. It is just the touchscreen which doesn't work. There seem to be three major types of touchscreen freezes: the highlight word / dictionary pop-up, the page flipping after reading awhile, and the recently out of sleep mode freeze.
