In any event, apparently this is not really what it seems. According to The Verge, Motorola sued both Apple, Inc. and Apple Germany, and this default judgment was against Apple, Inc.

That would also explain the default judgment - I don't know anything about the actual merits of the case, but it did seem extremely strange that Apple wasn't defending it at all.
