I've also noticed that my new K4 background is a little grayer than my K3. I've found two things that seems to help this;

Restart your K4 (menu/settings/menu/restart). This seems to lighten the background a little. I do this every ~2-3 weeks on my DXG and it seems to help it as well.

When you have finished reading something, turn the K4 off by holding the on/off button until the screen goes blank (btw, this does not actually power-off the K4, just puts into sleep mode without screensavers) . This avoids those, very dark K4 screensavers and this seems to improve/lighten the K4 background a bit. I think you get a lot of residual black left over from these silly screensavers.

Using both of these tricks, my K4 background is a bit better but still not as as white as my K3 and DXG. I think that Amazon is going to need to address this imho.
