There is never a stupid question.
It sounds to me like this:
you want to make the books list (or collections list) have an index so you can quickly get to books you want.
To do that you will need a rooted PRS-T1, and then you would have to write a home screen replacement that would give you the list of books.
I have started writing my own Homescreen replacement and I will keep in mind having indexes for the lists.
