Peter Singer, the Princeton philosopher who wrote Animal Liberation, would say no. Although the organism reacts to injury, it doesn't feel pain in the way that animals do, with brains that produce emotions in addition to the autonomic functions of plants. For him, the experience of pain is the key criterion for possessing rights against having one's life unnecessarily ended. (And we definitely have necessity on our side vs. plants).
