You`re not Northern, Southern, or Western, you`re just plain -American-. Your national identity is more important than your local identity, because you don`t really have a local identity. You might be from the region in that map, which is defined by this kind of accent, but you could easily not be. Or maybe you just moved around a lot growing up.
Your quite incorrect about that we in america in general very much identify with our specific regions midwesterners have a different identity than the pacific northwest, and the southwesterners, and the texans are neither southwesterners or "southerners" completly differently culture in the south and well as in the northeast.
While serving in the us army i was stationed near columbus georgia, and near fayetteville north carolina, near tacoma washington and in new york near the canadian border, then after retiring lived in san angelo west texas before my texan wife and i moved to wisconsin.
Each and every single one of them have distinct dialect of english each have very different cultural and historical backgrounds and each have thier own political identities each also have thier own biases... yes im an american but i am also a washingtonian and my wife a texan.
We are all americans as a whole but we are different regionaly. part of that is the way our nation was settled. in doing that we developed our own identity.
