I started with the first one many, many years ago too and have pretty much read them in order. I wouldn't recommend starting with the first one though. Here's a nice illustrated guide:

ETA: As TheLongshot said, where you start depends on your taste. There are laugh-out-loud moments in all the books but some of the later ones also contain some underlying seriousness beneath the humor. I can't really say which were my favorites but I remember being moved by Small Gods, Feet of Clay and Jingo.
