eta: i've been trying to find out more about the STR, but the main reason I want Wi-Fi is to be able to download books from my Sugarsync account. I see reports of STR just eating anything you download off of the "hidden web browser".. that worries me. If I need to hook up in order to get books on the Nook, the wi-fi is pretty much useless to me.
Yout mention in your first paragraph, that you are open to rooting. If that is the case, then your concerns regarding downloading via sugarsync should be moot. My rooted STR is able to access my dropbox account via wifi - so my calibre library etc. is readily available. Note - this is using the dropbox app; I'm not familiar with Sugarsync, but I assume it would be comparable.
