I just emailed a PDF with no DRM to my gmail account. I was able to download it to my T1 ok. I touched (press & hold) the download link under the file name in the email to bring up a pop-up menu from which I selected "Open" to initiate the download action.

Like Kate said, it might just be one of these quirky files that have issues. I suggest that you try another file to see if you still can't download anything from gmail.
