metadata.calibre growing large

The metadata.calibre file on the root of my device is now larger, (0.5MB and growing), than most of my individual books, (typically < 0.3MB), and the largest sections within it are "thumbnail": [ ... ] sections. However, some of these sections simply contain the word null whereas others have many lines of 'gibberish' (jpg data?). Can I set them all to null without stopping this file from doing whatever it does? Why have some books got such data and others not?
