I agree with the other posts about books being "Americanized". American publishers seem to dread that their readers will be confused by Britishisms and do ridiculous things like changing "football" to "soccer".

Interestingly, I know of one book originally published in Britain where the American publisher did not change the spellings in the text, but insisted that "Colour" be spelled "Color" in the title.
