Actually it's the opposite of what you claim. Mass and energy are always equivalent, and mass is never lost, not even in nuclear reactions (because the energy in the system remains the same the mass has to stay the same as well per E=mc˛).

Interesting, and entirely different from what my instructors and textbooks claimed in high school and even college. Considering how long relativity theory has been around, that seems surprising, but I suppose the interpretation of these things changes all the time. Still, I'm fairly amazed that it would do so on something that fundamental.
