Update to original problem; i realised i formatted the sd card using a mac os x extended format so i re-formatted into the MS-DOS (FAT32) and now the T1 can read the files which i have manually placed using finder.
Now if i try to send a pdf file to either the device or the card in Calibre i get one pop up saying that the file has no available formats. Then another pop up containing the following:
ERROR: Error: Error communicating with device
'list' object has no attribute 'get_collections'
Traceback (most recent call last):

AttributeError: 'list' object has no attribute 'get_collections'
Any ideas what i can do?

The first one says you have format X in your Library, the device Plugin says: "device only does A, B, C". If you know better, customize the Output plugin in Preferences: Plugins and set what formats you will accept and the order of preference.
The error:

(no clue. I leave those for the developers)
