Calibre (PRS T1) Error communicating with device

Hi guys. I just got my T1 yesterday, downloaded the latest Calibre for OS X 10.6.8, and tried to transfer a few of my books (pdf's) to test the set up and get going, however, a few issues have surfaced which i can't find any solution for either by editing the preferences or through reading previous posts here in the forum so i really need your help.

Firstly, when i connect the T1 in the Data transfer mode i get the following communicating with device error pop up:

calibre, version 0.8.24
ERROR: Error: Error communicating with device

database disk image is malformed

I am using a 16GB sd card but the error appears with or without this installed. I tried formatting the card through the T1 and also with OS X's disk utility but the problems still persist.
In the Calibre app window the device and card are shown in the toolbar but if i try to send a file to either the T1 or the card they are not shown in the corresponding display. Nor are they picked up when i disconnect the T1 and check it myself. All i have are the original 'boxed' books.
My pdf files are however shown in the finder (i've put them in both device and card to try everything) but they are completely messed up with the author and/or title showing completely differently to what i had entered into the calibre library and edited using edit metadata (sometimes with entries completely unrecognisable.

Even using the sony reader i can upload a file to the library and from there to the device window (but its not on the T1 when i look), but i cant move anything to the card even though it is recognised. But i prefer to not use reader as the functionality is next to zero.

Calibre looks perfect if only i could get it to work, and my T1. ARGH!
I have tried everything in my knowledge skills but i am not computer literate like you guys so i hope you can help and explain whats going on in non-computer language please.
