I read every word of the body of the story. To me it's about picturing all the aspects of the story, and not just going along reading enough to know what's generally going on.
That said, there's nothing I hate more than verbosity when it comes to descriptions of location or surroundings. I love writers who concentrate on their characters' thought processes and the plot, rather than on 'setting the scene'.
