Now, folks, speaking of Sony products, I have found that there're virtually no books I can't get on my 505 between the snazzy eBook Applications firmware and my assortment of tools and thingamajigs (thanks to MobileRead, that kind of thing is available for anyone somewhat tech-savvy and willing to get their hands a wee bit dirty) - heck, even the dreaded scanned .pdf works OK enough under landscape mode. The way I knew Sony, they used to build some sturdy powerhouses with enough versatility for the kind of end-user that I am and that's made me buy, consider and suggest Sony products - such as cameras, TV sets, MP3 players or the little Japanese tank in the brown leatherette cover waiting patiently on my desk here, which I nailed second-hand at under 150 US bucks.

Living where I do, it's not easy to get one's hands on the latest gadgets (especially for a niche market that doesn't have a lot of support), but I did get the chance to fiddle with the T1, which I wanted to get as my next reader of choice. Now, I have played with touchscreen eInk devices and I have modded the bejeezus out of my Optimus One, so I figured I knew what to expect, but this doohickey here, well, aside from the crippled, albeit rootable Eclair, the nifty touchscreen and the comfy enough real buttons, let's just say it doesn't look to me like something I'd want to hold on to and treasure for several years to come. I just want a solid device that can display my books as usefully as can be; if it also comes with capabilities I'd like (unlike, say, the MP3 player on my 505), then I expect to be able to use them properly. Unfortunately, neither the rather glitchy T1 nor the still-immature Android OS can offer me that just yet - but, if Sony get their act together and come up with a rock-solid Android eInk reader / tablet contraption, I'll be sorely tempted to get it instead of, say, a Kindle or a Nook. (That is, unless Amazon or B&N pull it off before Sony do, of course; a guy can dream, right?)
