I'm not sure exactly what the proper recovery portion is supposed to do, other than being mounted and available in the OS. I've recently picked up 3 other Android phones that I'm going to install Clockwork Mod on over the next few days. I hope to glean more understanding of how things work from that experience. If nothing else, I can look at what the other devices actually put on those partitions.

I suspect the reason Entourage didn't use a regular update.zip file is they had to customize it to work with ubifs since all of the other android devices I'm seeing use JFFS. So the level of difficulty of turning this device into a form that will work with standard recovery is as yet unclear to me.
