Want under $100, maybe the Kindle ?

My EBW-1150 seems to be a complete dead end. The Kindle now goes for $79.00 USD, but I have some concerns:

Limited file formats, but it does appear that Calibre can help me.

How to transfer the files to the Kindle ? Need to do this via USB, ideally a simple file copy, with the Kindle seen as another drive. Have no interest in the wi-fi feature, just an additional expense to buy the access point, which is otherwise useless to me.

Is the Kindle a good bet, or is there something better ?

At $100.00 or more, used paperbacks are a better deal. My use is casual reading during my commute back and forth from work.

If it matters, I use both Windows 7 and the latest Mageia Linux, (Mandriva fork) on my PC's. In a pinch, I could add Windows XP, or another Linux distro.

TIA
