Nearly finished it myself. I guess I'm going to have to un-ignore Jon to really follow this discussion, but...

The world as we know it has come to an end. A man with a jewish sounding name creates an a religious order to preserve human knowledge. Works for me. The is no indication anywhere in the book that Leibowitz was a practicing Jew. There *seems* to be indications that he *was* a practicing Christian.
