I got round the problem by going into the folder called Calibre Library in Finder on the Mac (and I presume there is something similar on a Windows machine), opened the Library and then double-clicked on the Kobo icon showing on screen so I could see its stored books. Then I simply did a drag and drop of the books I wanted to load onto the KT. I pulled the whole folder across, containing the text, cover and whatever else is there as part of the book.

That's what I did....found the epub file in Finder, dragged it over to the Kobo, and voila - Bob's yer uncle!
Worked just fine.
Jesus, I hope the book is worth all this aggravation.
