Hmm...good post. I think one could make a case for classics being "international" in scope and hence outside of language restrictions. There is no doubt that many writings are best read in the original. One of the best examples is the Quran which loses virtually all of its poetry and meter when translated. But can we afford to ignore Dostoyevsky until we learn Russian? Sometimes the best answer is the lesser of two evils.
