To read a book purchased from Amazon you need to install Kindle for PC (or Mac) on your computer and you can download the books to that. I also have the Kindle app on my iPhone and iPad.
However to read them on my Kobo I convert them to epubs using Calibre. To do that I first need to remove the DRM which we can't discuss on Mobileread. If you google "remove DRM" you can find the answers to any questions you may have. Apprentice Alf is very helpful.
