There may very well be a hardware limitation that prevents the new code from working. However the new code could also probably be ported to the older systems if they wanted to do so. I'm afraid this is the trend in most consumer electronics, as soon as the new product is out, the old stuff is ignored no matter how bad the problem might be. Just look at cell phone support with Android, you are lucky they keep the connections open for you after the newest model arrives, it is all an attempt to get you to upgrade sooner to lock in that monthly income.
