For what it's worth, this past summer was the first time I traveled with my reader - and I forgot to take it out of my carry on to put through the scanner separately. Huge panic - as the security people asked if I had a "tablet computer".
Normally, I take out my netbook, my phone, my GPS and now my reader and put them in a separate bin for scanning when I put my carry-on on the belt to be scanned. They seem to want most sorts of electronic devices sent through separately. It doesn't seem to affect the devices, but it keeps the security people happy.
