The ones purchased by SONY. And you can actually delete them - manually, by going into the directory in which the software stores them - but they will still be in the list of books displayed by the Reader software. The cover still appears, with an arrow (indicating the need to re-download).

As I mentioned, I think this is a minor problem - compared to the faulty support for annotations or the inability to import certain (SONY-store purchased) periodicals. But it is an inconvenience.
