Your eyes aren't playing tricks on you!

All other thing being equal the higher the dpi (resolution) the better defined the objects that are shown. Since they both have the same resolution, what you are seeing is the difference in technology (IPS) and the quality of the screen. Overall screen quality is hard to beat.

The Fire with its 170dpi IPS screen should be a show stopper. Until the iPad3 shows up, the Fire will have the best screen in the industry.

P.S. Resolution (dots-per-inch) has nothing to do with screen size.

BTW: Pixels-per-inch is not seen much anymore, I think it's because of the various ways used to display colors. But who knows?
