Isn't 3 a wonderfully expensive number? Plus, it really doesn't help when you're there all day every day and they see just one more book, eraser, pencil, sharpener, bookmark, etc....
To be fair, one of the books was a birthday gift for a classmate, and the bookmarks were a last minute purchase by me for my 3; I bought 2 for each of them.
On the other hand, that purchase and the others like it, did help to buy one copy of almost every book for the school library, so it was all for a good cause.
