I am not interested in a Kindle due to the closed system and the lack of SD slots. I went to Best Buy and looked at the tablets there, but wasn't totally impressed, probably helped along by the clueless salesperson who couldn't tell me the differences between them.
SD card is a big issue to me as I have over 2000 books and my collection is rapidly growing. I totally agree about hacking; I'd really much rather a tablet that does what I want out of the box. My experience with my rooted Nook just confirms this view. It has always been buggy and a pain after hacking; it was just the best solution at the time for what I was looking for.
I just pre-ordered the Kobo Vox which seems to suit my needs. An Android tablet that I don't have to root, but designed mainly for reading which is my biggest want for my tablet. It's nice to be able to check email and do light browsing when wi-fi is available, but I really want it to read. And I'll be able to install my favorite Cool Reader if I don't like the stock reader it comes with.
