Thanks Wallcraft but with respect, and I DO mean respect, posting advice is wonderful, but you need to read post:

Since all I asked about is collections - I think it's clear from my post I know precisely how to use the Kindle telling me I can put them in a folder and get the docs onto kindle is a little redundant and ignores that NOT doing this is EXACTLY what I am trying to do ... or not do ... as the case may be.

And I stated expressly that, for ME, using Calibre TO MAKE COLLECTIONS takes as long as the fiveclicks per file-to-folder of just adding to folder by using Kindle.

Ah! I see what was confusing about the folder issue in what I said. I meant that I know there is only ONE level of folder so I have a folder called, e.g. [SF - Laura Gilman] containing only her books and another folder called [FA - Terry Pratchett] with his, etc. I will note that AFAIK one CANNOT HAVE a "first level of folder" unless the Kindle has seriously changed in a year there IS only ONE level. Or did they change in upgrade and I missed it? Wow that would be AWESOME!!!

And again with respect, I have my own kindle files organized for MY needs, and alphabetical A to Z is NOT the way I organize.

So thanks but this pretty much ignores everything I actually wrote!

AND btw: the good news is that Kranf seems to be working again so problem actually solved ... for now *cue ominous music!*
