Since kf8 will be readable on all existing kindles and on the KFire, I don't see that anything is being splintered. Although of course the distinction between Amazon and Epub is being maintained.

I am very curious to see what the new format can do, though - and if anyone will take advantage of it.

For that matter, this is probably good news for Sony/Nook users, since it might encourage them to adopt epub 3, which afaik, no e-readers support yet.
