The kernel has to load. The update.sh script is just a script running on top of linux...which runs on top of the linux kernel. So that's why the kernel has to run
vicinc, try this.
Insert a usb stick with dingo-golden renamed as update.zip into your PE.
Boot it up, and hit a key to stop the boot process.
Now type
