Update: after trying some new search terms, I found similar problems from a while back and followed the advice to remove the "network-manager" packages. This made the internet unavailable, but after a reboot, it came back and calibre now works as expected.
However, I'm without the benefits (whatever they are) of the network-manager packages, which seem to be related to wifi, bluetooth etc. I'm not using those on this machine at the moment, but does anyone have a sense of what parts of those packages were causing problems for me and how we can get them and calibre to work together?
