While I trust the iPad to do exactly what I need, there's a couple of things to consider

* The price/usage ratio: it's really really expensive - which is justified seeing all that it can do - but buying a several-hundreds-dollars uber-multimedia device just to read books on it would be overdoing it.
You can get a refurbished iPad from apple.com for $399; still twice as expensive as a Kindle Fire or nook Color but well worth it considering what you want this device to do.

Although I suppose any kind of LCD-screen device would be a potential target, I'm assuming that the recognizable iPad is more desirable than others.
Yikes. Nothing I can say will help you here. While there was certainly a great deal of crime in the city I grew up in, there was still a sense of honor amongst thieves; and the elderly and handicapped were certainly off limits. Times have changed however, I guess no one is safe now.

Anyone's got feedback on that? (or other alternatives)
Its the 7 inch screen that worries me...you may not be able to enlarge the font as much as she needs without having to make a lot of page turns.

A bit out of scope for these boards...but would audiobooks be a better fit? The devices that play them are smaller and easily concealed from would-be muggers; and content is available through audible.com, itunes, and even some public libraries.
