Android is really a framework and GUI on top of Linux. Sony was paying for a framework and GUI on top of Linux already (and spending more than they would on Android).

Sony has one big reason for going Android for the T1: They are also supporting tablets with reader software now as well. Being able to share programmers between the two (as well as more code) is a benefit rather than having to deal with multiple GUI layers.

The problem is that it feels like the switch was a bit rushed in order to make it in time for the holiday season. Too much porting work with not enough time, and having to push the device out on a schedule rather than when it is done. But who knows what the effect of missing this holiday season in the face of the Nook STR and new Kindle devices would have been. Rock and a hard spot.
