Well it's both really. Probably not what you wanted to hear. It's certainly dark and depressing as books about war are, but there is light in the darkness too. Very well written and worth the read, but don't do it if you are feeling down.

A possible comparison is the book of which I can't recall the name (of course) set during a war (WW2?) about the guide in the art gallery who remembers all the works of art.
