Doing what you've suggested (in your latest post - let me take the time now to say THANKS!), I have this on my screen:
1) a place to put my email address
2) a place to put my password
3) the keyboard
There's nothing else.

I'm already able to get on the internet using my nook. It's just that I can't download any apps from the Google Market place because they keep wanting a phone number.
