Takeshi Kovacs novels by Richard Morgan (starting with Altered Carbon)

I'd also agree with Ender's series by Orson Scott Cards.

For fantasy, The Mistborn trilogy and The Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson are amazing, in my opinion.

I also remember enjoying The Riftwar Saga (Mainly Magician: Apprentice and Magician: Master) by Raymond E. Feist
