Nobody likes DRM, but that's not an unique problem for Kindle, Nook has DRM as well when buying books from B&N. And both camps can sideload DRM free books.
To me one of the biggest selling point for Kindle is that you can use it as a complete computer tether free device not only for buying books, but also side loading books and borrowing books from library, where with a Nook one must connect the computer to the ereader.
Format is a non-issue for book reading
unless you've invested heavily on DRMed books to a particular format. Otherwise you can do a one-time batch convert from one format to another using some of the excellent free tools such as Calibre. With DRMed books, people will have to strip that out first of course...
