If your computer goes to sleep or enters hibernate while you are trying to charge it the charging process will not be successful and while the computer is asleep the battery may actually discharge.

Also make sure you don't have any buttons stuck, like volume control, make sure you don't have a mp3 playing as this will drain the battery.
