When I can't quite read the tiny text in portrait mode, I find it's better to put it in landscape and read each page in strips, and that usually works okay (though button placement makes it more awkward to hold and operate). If I have to pan/zoom, I give up. On devices with PDF reflow, I haven't liked the results most of the time, so while I'd like the option, I don't miss it much.

It may be a little better on Kindle Touch, depending on how they hook up the touch interface. At least the lack of buttons will make landscape operation more symmetric with portrait, and zoom in/out should be a simple double tap with drag to pan. I am not expecting them to improve it very much beyond that, however.
