I do recommend the Young Wizards series. Note that each book is a story complete in itself. There is development through the stories in the series, but there's no cliff-hanger endings between books. And there will probably be more books in the future. But if there aren't, it wouldn't spoil the series.
There are some continuity/time-line problems, as the first books were written a long time ago, which the more recent books use modern technology, even though only a few years have passed in the story time-line. But it's easy to ignore this.
Alternatively, if you like cats, the feline wizards series is shorter, and also very good indeed (same universe as the Young Wizards series, but centred on cats)
