Have you looked at Scan Tailor (http://scantailor.sourceforge.net/)? Try the forum at http://www.diybookscanner.org/forum/ -- I'm sure there are few tips for a frequent book scanner like you -- it doesn't just cater to 'hyper sophisticated ones'
