I think the original poster was talking about a router. Most services I see come only with a single connector to a computer. If you have more than one device you need a router and if you need to buy a router then they almost always include a Wireless capability.

The old switch box is not a router per-se but still needs something to serve as a gateway between the local network and the service. If your service provides multiple ethernet ports then I believe that is an exception to the rule where I live.
